Good Morning All,
I had began a teaching on Mark 4. We spoke on the importance of this parable. Jesus told them in verse 13 the importance of understanding this parable, so they will be able to understand and discern all others! Just as Jesus took the time and explained this parable to them, we have the Holy Spirit that wants to explain the word of God to us!! It is vital for us to understand the word of God and then be doers of it!
1AGAIN JESUS began to teach beside the lake. And a very great crowd gathered about Him, so that He got into a ship in order to sit in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was at the lakeside on the shore.
2And He taught them many things in parables (illustrations or comparisons put beside truths to explain them), and in His teaching He said to them:
This is where we ended in the last teaching on mark 4 and where the parable begins. Jesus tells the parable, then goes back and explains it. What I am going to do it put the scripture and then his explanation under it!
3Give attention to this! Behold, a sower went out to sow.
Here the parable begins with a sower. What is a sower and how do you sow? Lets look at the definition of sower:
plant seed: to scatter or plant seed on an area of land in order to grow crops
– introduce idea: to instill and spread an idea, especially one which is negative or divisive
– spread something thickly: to spread something thickly with something
So the Lord starts this parable about a person who goes out to spread something quickly, or scatter or plant something, or goes out to introduce an idea. In his explanation in verse 14 God makes it very clear what this sower is to sow!!
14The sower sows the Word.
Are you a sower of the word? Do you use every opportunity to plant the word in peoples lives?
Then the parable speaks of what happens as he is sowing… As we begin to look at the following scriptures we have to keep in mind that the seed that is being sown in the Word of God and the places where it is being sown is the different grounds, you may say it is the different conditions or circumstances of people hearts. Lets look at the following scriptures and then Jesus’ explanation of the parable:
4And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.
15The ones along the path are those who have the Word sown [in their hearts], but when they hear, Satan comes at once and [by force] takes away the message which is sown in them.
We see here in this verse that there is NO PROTECTION from Satan, in this example the people have given Satan the right to come in do as he wills. He does not want people to get the WORD of God cause he knows how powerful it is. Satan has full access in there lives and comes in immediately and steals the word away!!!
5Other seed [of the same kind] fell on ground full of rocks, where it had not much soil; and at once it sprang up, because it had no depth of soil;
6And when the sun came up, it was scorched, and because it had not taken root, it withered away.
16And in the same way the ones sown upon stony ground are those who, when they hear the Word, at once receive and accept and welcome it with joy;
17And they have no real root in themselves, and so they endure for a little while; then when trouble or persecution arises on account of the Word, they immediately are offended (become displeased, indignant, resentful) and they stumble and fall away.
There are places in the bible that talk about stony hearts, Hardening your heart. This is the kind of ground we are talking about here. Where we have allowed life circumstances or offenses to come in and harden our hearts. On the surface these people receive the word with joy, they seem open and excited for the word of God, but because they have a hard heart, the word can not take root and cause them to change and they continue to be easily offended and their heart grows harder and they are not able to hold on to the joy of the word when trials come their way.
7Other seed [of the same kind] fell among thorn plants, and the thistles grew and pressed together and utterly choked and suffocated it, and it yielded no grain.
18And the ones sown among the thorns are others who hear the Word;
19Then the cares and anxieties of the world and distractions of the age, and the pleasure and delight and false glamour and deceitfulness of riches, and the craving and passionate desire for other things creep in and choke and suffocate the Word, and it becomes fruitless.
I believe this part of the parable is speaking of alot of christians today, who have allowed the world to creep into their lives and choke out the work the word of God wants to do in their lives and because of this their life is unfruitful for the kingdom of God. The word tells us that we are in this world, but not of this world… We cannot allow the things of the flesh come in and choke the word of God out of our lives….We need to allow His Word to work in our hearts
8And other seed [of the same kind] fell into good (well-adapted) soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing, and yielded up to thirty times as much, and sixty times as much, and even a hundred times as much as had been sown.
9And He said, He who has ears to hear, let him be hearing [and let him consider, and comprehend].
20And those sown on the good (well-adapted) soil are the ones who hear the Word and receive and accept and welcome it and bear fruit–some thirty times as much as was sown, some sixty times as much, and some [even] a hundred times as much.
We need to examine our heart today and see if we are truly open to allowing God’s word to take root in our lives. Are we willing to be not only hearers, but doers of His Word? When we receive and accept Gods word and do it….We will begin to bear fruit for His kingdom!!! For example, the word of God tells us we need to live in forgiveness with all men. If we don’t forgive, God can’t forgive us….. If we at any time are harboring unforgiveness towards anyone, we have stopped the fruit, the blessings from being produced in our lives…. The choice once again is OURS!!
21And He said to them, Is the lamp brought in to be put under a peck measure or under a bed, and not [to be put] on the lampstand?
22[Things are hidden temporarily only as a means to revelation.] For there is nothing hidden except to be revealed, nor is anything [temporarily] kept secret except in order that it may be made known.
23If any man has ears to hear, let him be listening and let him perceive and comprehend.
24And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you–and more [besides] will be given to you who hear.
God is truly a God that operates under the principal of Seed Time and Harvest…. What you are harvesting in your life today is dependant on what you have been planting in your life… What are you spending your time doing, what are you listening to? Give time to the study of Gods word and you will get undertanding and comprehend God’s perfect plan for your life! He desires for you to increase and multiply 30, 60 and 100 fold!!! He is a God of increase…. Study his word, believe his word, Sow his word over your life and the lives of others, receive correction and direction from His word and see How Far He will take you!! He will do abundantly more than you could ever think or imagine.
25For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away [by force],
26And He said, The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seed upon the ground,
27And then continues sleeping and rising night and day while the seed sprouts and grows and increases–he knows not how.
28The earth produces [acting] by itself–first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
29But when the grain is ripe and permits, immediately he sends forth [the reapers] and puts in the sickle, because the harvest stands ready.
30And He said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use to illustrate and explain it?
31It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all seeds upon the earth;
32Yet after it is sown, it grows up and becomes the greatest of all garden herbs and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air are able to make nests and dwell in its shade.
33With many such parables [Jesus] spoke the Word to them, as they were able to hear and to comprehend and understand.
34He did not tell them anything without a parable; but privately to His disciples (those who were peculiarly His own) He explained everything [fully].
The word of God says that the Holy Spirit is our teacher. If you are having trouble understanding the word of God, ask for His help!! Even as Jesus took time to fully explain this parable to his disciples, the Holy Spirit will teach us and explain the word of god to us today!! His Word is life!!!!!! I pray today that you are a sower of the word and that you are also allowing the word to be sown into your heart and that it is GOOD ground and you are allowing His word to take root and do a continual work in your heart, it is not a one time thing!!!!
God bless you
